Johnsonburg track and field splits against Oswayo Valley

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg track and field team opened the season against Oswayo Valley Tuesday at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Johnsonburg won in the girls’ events by a team score of 80-66. Oswayo Valley won 87-46 in the boys’ events.
In the girls’ events, Chelsea Benson of Johnsonburg won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.5. Teammate Carissa Imdorf was second with a 19.57 and Tracey Ecklund was third at 20.59.
In the javelin, Kiesha Dornish of Johnsonburg won with a mark of 116-11 1/4. Cody Anderson was second with a 93-0.

Larry Lee Serafini

Larry Lee Serafini, age 54, of 3399 Rt. 219 Brockway, died March 29, 2011 at DuBois Regional Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 10, 1956 in DuBois, son of Albert and Elda Sicheri Serafini.
He was baptized catholic and was a member V.F.W. Club at Crenshaw.
Larry was an avid fan of all sports, but he especially enjoyed football and the Dallas Cowboys.
He was employed at Owens-Brockway where he was employed as a Utility Worker.

Angeline Petro

Angeline Petro of Livonia, Mich. passed away on Feb. 19, 2011 after a long illness. She was born in Johnsonburg, daughter of Antonio and Pasqualina Defranco.
She is survived by her husband, John; two sons, John and wife Lisa, and Joseph and wife Amanda; one daughter, Marianne and husband Stefan; six grandchildren, Vincent, Dominic, Samuel, Benjamin, Daniel and Logann; two sisters, Rose Guidice, and Josephine Quattrone and husband Frank of Ridgway; and two brothers, Roy Defranco and wife Julia of Johnsonburg, and Fred and wife Monica of St. Marys.

Vincent Drago

Vincent Drago, 102, of Portland Mills Road, Ridgway, and formerly of St. Louis, Missouri, died Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Elk Regional Health Center, after complications from pneumonia.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Hope Coville Drago of Ridgway; son Tyrone Drago of St. Decorah, Iowa; four daughters and one son-in-law, Pat Hicks of Manchester, Missouri, Carole Ewald of Baldwin, Missouri, Vicki and Jim Krebs of St. Charles, Missouri and Joy Drago of Cranberry Twp; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Jean “Minnie” (Bricen) Lander

Jean “Minnie” (Bricen) Lander, 84, of the Elk Haven Nursing Home, St.Marys, died on Monday, March 28, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
She was born on June 28, 1926 in Weedville, daughter of the late Thomas and Agnes (Gardner) Bricen.
She lived all of her life in Elk County. She worked as a Nurse's Aide for Ridgway and St. Marys hospitals and Helpmates. She worked as a bar manager or waitress at Ridgway Country Club, Peacock Lounge of St. Marys and Aiello's Café of Ridgway.

Weitzel named PSAC West Player of the Week

LOCK HAVEN – Clarion junior shortstop Jerico Weitzel (Ridgway/Ridgway) is the PSAC West baseball Player of the Week after helping the Golden Eagles split a pair of games against Mercyhurst Saturday.
Weitzel, who is hitting .293 on the season, hit .625 (5-for-8) with three runs scored and four RBIs in the doubleheader while also stealing a pair of bases in as many tries.
Playing a key role in Clarion’s 11-8 eight-inning, second-game win, Weitzel was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs. He had a key RBI single and scored a run in a four-run eighth inning that gave Clarion the win.

Crusaders open tennis season with 8-1 win over Johnsonburg

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders opened the 2011 tennis season on Tuesday afternoon with an 8 to 1 victory over the Johnsonburg Area High Rams in a match played at Benzinger and Memorial Parks.
"This was a good start to the season," said ECCHS Head Coach Nick Caggiano. "We definitely wanted to come on strong and I believe we accomplished that. In singles, Ben and Jarid played strong tennis and imposed their game well. They were patient when they had to be and aggressive when they had to be."

Punxsy squads sweep ECC teams in season opener

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic track and field teams opened their season Tuesday by hosting the Punxsutawney squads.
The Punxsy team swept the Elk Catholic squads. The Chucks beat the Crusaders 82-68 while the Lady Chucks edged the Lady Crusaders 76.5 to 73.5.
“We had a good opening meet today,” said ECCHS coach John Schneider.

Ridgway baseball looking for success with senior-laden group

Ridgway baseball enters the new season with a senior-laden team ready to compete in District 9.
Ridgway started last season with an 8-3 record but faded in the second month of the season, finishing 4-5 in the final nine games. Ridgway lost in the first round of the playoffs to eventual District 9 champion Elk County Catholic.

Rams look for consistency with young team

JOHNSONBURG – For Johnsonburg head baseball coach Jeff Peterson, inconsistency was the difference between his squad being a good team rather than a great team.
“Inconsistency was our problem last year with the older kids,” coach Peterson said. “My older group was the group that I needed to rely on and I didn’t get a whole lot out of them except for maybe the pitching department a little bit.
“Other than that, I was pretty satisfied coming away at .500 last year because I really wasn’t expecting to do that well.”
