Elkers down Port Allegany 61-38 to remain unbeaten

Ridgway gradually pulled away with the help of small spurts throughout the game as the Elkers remained undefeated with a 61-38 victory over Port Allegany in boys basketball action Wednesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
The Gators (1-2) held with the Elkers (4-0) through the early section of the first quarter as the game was even at 9-all. Ridgway closed the opening quarter on a 6-0 run as a Tony Leithner basket was sandwiched in between two hoops from Eric Matheson.

Rams survive test against Smethport, eye holiday tourney

JOHNSONBURG – Despite a late rally from Smethport in the closing minutes of the game, unblemished Johnsonburg (4-0) closed out the visiting Hubbers, 55-49, and now shift their attention to next weekend's Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament.
Nursing a 3-point lead down the stretch, Clay Schuler came up with a timely steal off Johnsonburg senior Kyle Sheldon and hit a layup on the other end to cut the deficit to one point at 48-47.

Commission wraps up year-end items

Officials of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] are looking forward to the new year as applications are being looked at by state government for PREP [Partnership for Regional and Economic Performance] funding.
During Wednesday's board meeting, the commission's executive director, Eric Bridges, reported that NCPRPDC has complied with the Department of Community and Economic Development's [DCED] requests for a single application for approved funding under PREP.

Monitoring project expands

The Elk County Monitoring Project, spearheaded by Elk County Conservation District [ECCD] watershed specialist Kim Bonfardine, has expanded to the Brockway Watershed.
The monitoring project is designed to keep an eye on stream conditions in the wake of the Marcellus Shale drilling by measuring the temperature, flow and conductivity in each stream. The total project cost for the four-year program is estimated at $329,330.
As of Monday night's ECCD meeting, Bonfardine said one satellite telemetry system has been installed and another will be installed within the week.

William M. "Tooley" Zimmerman

William M. "Tooley" Zimmerman, 75, of 3034 Rasselas Rd., Wilcox, died Tuesday night, Dec. 20, 2011, at the Lutheran Home in Kane following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 15, 1936 in Rasselas, son of Michael and Mary Fiscus Zimmerman. He married Cecelia Yankovich on June 29, 1963 in St. Ann's Church, Wilcox, and she preceded him in death on April 2, 1990.
He resided in the Wilcox-Rasselas area all his life and attended Wilcox High School.
