Lions club continuously involved in community

Since its beginning in 1950, the Ridgway Lions Club has been actively involved in supporting its community. B.H. Robb, a member of the Clearfield Lions Club and District Zone Chairman, initially pursued the possibility of organizing a Ridgway charter. On April 27, 1950, the charter was successfully intact. Since then, the club has been pursuing many avenues of community support.
A current event the club produces is an annual magic show. John Charleson, Chairman and member for more than 20 years, says this is a major fundraiser.

Daniel reports limited activity

BROCKPORT – Sergeant Steve Daniel of the Ridgway-based state police attended Wednesday night's Horton Township Board of Supervisors meeting to address any concerns within the township.
"Things have been pretty calm relatively speaking," Daniel said. "There have been some traffic crashes and that is to be expected."
Daniel reported receiving speeding complaints.

Joseph A. Renaud

Joseph A. Renaud, 84, of 506 Sheridan Ave., Ridgway, died early Wednesday morning, Nov. 9, 2011, at UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie following a brief illness.
He was born Jan. 26, 1927, in St. Marys, son of the late Joseph E. and Eva (Weis) Renaud.
He married Clementine M. Fabiano on Feb. 7, 1948 in St. Leo Catholic Church in Ridgway, and she preceded him in death on April 26, 1998.

Kenneth W. Parks

Kenneth W. Parks, 97, of 706 Market St., Johnsonburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys.
He was born September 1, 1914 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Norman and Anna Mabel Pond Parks.
He married Madeline Mannella on October 5, 1947 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg. She survives.
He resided in Johnsonburg his entire life and was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1933.

Kemmer takes 3rd seat in upset over Beimel

Republican Janis E. Kemmer reportedly took the third seat Tuesday as she upset incumbent Democrat Ronald T. Beimel in a closely-contested election for one of three Elk County commissioner seats.
"I am in awe," Kemmer said in a telephone interview late Tuesday night. "I'm very honored, truly blessed, and I'm very humbled by the voters.
"I will do my very best to represent the voters."
With all 33 precincts reporting, Kemmer held an unofficial lead of 133 votes over Beimel with 30 write-in votes unverified as of press time. Kemmer garnered a reported 3,099 votes.

School district approves raises

The Ridgway Area School District's Board of Directors approved a four-year administrative compensation plan during Tuesday night's meeting.
The new contract will increase the administration's salaries by six percent over four years, beginning July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2016.
Raises will increase by a half percent the first year. The second and third year will each increase by two percent and the final year of the contract will increase by one and a half percent.

Concert choir provides a variety of music for upcoming performances

This year’s November and December performances by the Elk County Concert Choir will be showcasing a unique take on traditional Christmas carols.
Along with the expertise of Principal Director Gloria Almquist-Shull, fellow choir members Lois Sadley, Co-Director, and Rita Ordiway, Accompanist, strategically selected the "Tapestry of Light: a Celtic Christmas Celebration "for their upcoming Christmas season showings.

Jason R. Warmbrodt

Jason R. Warmbrodt, 37, of 202 1/2 Willow St., Johnsonburg, died Monday evening, Nov. 7, 2011, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 14, 1974 in Ridgway, son of Richard A. Warmbrodt and the late Darcy S. Robuck Warmbrodt Schneider.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life, graduating from Johnsonburg Area High School in 1992.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Church. He was also employed by Eastern Sintered Alloys in St. Marys for the past 14 years.

Dennis M. Rakieski

Dennis M. Rakieski, 61, of 951 German Settlement Rd., Ridgway, passed away Monday, Nov. 7, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center, as the result of a logging accident.
He was born June 14, 1950, in Ridgway, the son of Alex and Ida Schmiedel Rakieski. On Aug. 21, 1971, he married Marcelyn Withrow, she survives. Mr. Rakieski was a lifelong Ridgway resident. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Ridgway Sportsmens Club. He graduated from Ridgway Area High School, Class of 1968 and from Williamsport Area Community College in 1970. He was a self-employed logger.
