Women Who Care distribute annual grants

ST. MARYS – Women Who Care, a charitable organization comprised of Elk County women who use philanthropic giving to strengthen the quality of life for families in area communities, presented grants to several area organizations at its Annual Membership and Grant Awarding Dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

The Elk County charitable organization “Women Who Care” (WWC) is holding a membership drive. Women Who Care was established in 2009 with nine charter members who had the idea of establishing a philanthropic giving circle. Charter member Paula Fritz Eddy describes the organization as a “giving circle that was established to provide a vehicle for nonprofit organizations to apply for funds to strengthen the quality of life for families in our local community.”

3 killed in accident on James City hill

A part-time police officer for three Pittsburgh area communities was one of three men killed in a crash early Saturday morning on the James City hill on Route 66 south of Kane.
State police said the men were headed north in a pickup truck on Route 66 at approximately 1:30 a.m. when the vehicle traveled off of the east side of the roadway and struck a tree on James City hill in Wetmore Township near the border of McKean and Elk counties.
The vehicle hit two more trees before rolling over several times and landing on its roof, police said.

Elk County Concert Choir involved in many aspects of music

The Elk County Concert Choir has been practicing for weeks for the holiday season’s upcoming performances. This year’s showings are entitled the "Tapestry of Light: a Celtic Christmas Celebration." The shows are scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Ridgway and Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Marys. Admission is free, and refreshments will be provided.

Doris V. Mitchell, 81, of Ridgway, passed away Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home.
She was born Feb. 27, 1930, in DuBois, the daughter of Harry and Ellen Pendleton Cook. She married Paul A. Mitchell on June 25, 1949, they were married 62 years.
