October 30, 2011

The snowy weather and muddy conditions on Saturday in Ridgway did little to slow down the Elk County Catholic High School girls’ and boys’ cross country squads in the District 9 Cross Country Championships held at the Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway. The girls’ team won their 11th consecutive AA team title by four points over Northern Potter, while the boys’ team finished second after being edged by Oswayo Valley by one point. Both squads will advance to compete in the state meet next weekend in Hershey.

Herzing having 'tree'-riffic time as forester

October 30, 2011

"If a tree falls in the forest..." -- Toby Herzing is the guy you'll want to talk to about it.
Herzing has been the recreation forester for the Elk State Forest and a service forester for Elk and Cameron counties for nearly seven years.
As a recreation forester, he works with the management and maintenance staff on recreational activities and projects such as trail maintenance, hiking, biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, geocaching, hunting and fishing.
"The State Forest provides many recreational opportunities for the forest users," Herzing said.

Elkers host banquet

October 30, 2011

Ridgway boys golf celebrated the season with a banquet Sunday night at Laurel Mill Golf Club.
"As we get together to close out the season, as the head coach I can only hope that it was an enjoyable experience for everybody involved," Ridgway boys golf head coach Dave Zawatski said. "Records, scores and streaks which will soon be forgotten aside, I learned long ago that it is the memories of the 'journey' that will always be cherished. When I look back on the season down the road, I will most definitely have a ton of good memories."
